Default Hull number

Hi, currently looking at a (remote) older Stingray. Since it's far from me, I try to sort out as much as possible before I take the expense and time to get there. One strange thing, maybe, seller says he can't find hull number. Is there a certain year that all US built boats needed to have a hull number?
Thanks

they have been required since I believe 1973-74 they need to be on or at the transom on the right or starboard side then manufactures put a second hidden number that they only know. For law enforcement to check if stolen Regards Dan
