Default Sad news for Checkmate Powerboats

This was posted on the Checkmate Powerboats forum yesterday

Checkmate Powerboats to be Dissolved
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 11/1/19

At the beginning of October, Checkmate has attempted to extend the current lease with the landlord, however an agreement could not be met. Therefore, after much thought and consideration of the current situation, the owners of Checkmate Powerboats have decided to dissolve the company, selling the molds, all the parts for completed boats, and the intellectual property. Checkmate has been around the boating industry for over 56 years, having an assortment of 17 different models in both sterndrive and outboard offerings. If you have interest in acquiring the Checkmate molds and intellectual property, please give us a call at 631-208-2933.

Lead,Follow , or get out of the way. Sad but true.

The market is Center Consoles in the sport boat market , problem is most of the current offshore hulls are to narrow for a CC for today’s market.

Not o mention they are Light years behind the big time CC builders that are leading the market .

I’ve been to the plant several times in the past yr and based on what I saw, unfortunately, this news does not surprise me.

Great boats, great company, great run.

RIP Checkmate.

Very sad, but last time I was in there a little over a year ago they were telling me that they had lots of orders for new boats and were doing very good.

Bummer

A 2400brx with a 400 or 450 would’ve been a cool boat to see

Look at the google maps pic (taken Sept 2018) and it shows the building was for lease back then and it looked desolate (maybe it was Sunday, but no cars/trucks in the parking lot).

Can't believe after 56 years they didn't own their own building. For most owners that is their retirement plan, sell the business and lease back the real estate or sell the real estate outright.

Cool boats, they should have started a line of pontoons or something lake related to supplement the dwindling sportboat market.

Dang another Iconic brand down the tubes......I never really was a big Checkmate fan but I am sad to see them go. 56 years is a Hell of a run.

Very sad, another long time boat builder gone. Face it, people would rather bury their head in their phones than go outside and experience the world they live in. I've never seen so few boats out on Long Island Sound, it's actually shocking the decline in the hobby.
