Question 454 Mag-carb on a bravo 1 upgrade advice.

The stock HP on my carbureted 454 MAG gen V(1992) is 360 hp. This motor has a total of 6 hrs on it. Thought about swapping the lower unit to a bravo III to be able to run a duo prop. Should give me better hole shot and slightly better fuel economy. I've changed my mind and now think I'm going to up the horse power instead. I have no idea though where to start. Reading/searching through posts it seems the consensus is to start with a cam and higher flowing carb. Current carb cfm is around 730-750 which should be plenty up to 500hp though. If this was a car I'd have no problem knowing where to start, but it's not. I need some help please. I realize the bravo I top end is rated at 500hp and at some point I would need to upgrade it. Better point out - where do I find upgrades like the exhaust, cam, etc...

A carb changed is based on what is planned for the motor. Decide on how much HP you want, then the parts come from that

That's a little much for what I want. Looking to bump my power to ~450 max.

Mods on a boat engine are a lot different than a car where you can feel small improvements. Boats need 50hp more to feel even a small difference and a 100hp to be anything worthwhile and at that point you really should start from the ground up.

Almost everyone here will tell you to find a “fun” engine and save your current engine in the garage. All of us have gone through this same process and have found that to be the best route.

I'm still around once in a while

Somebody a long time ago actually replicated 90% of my build and it dyno'd at 420hp Paging Griff

BTW, you will need aftermarket exhaust with longer risers to prevent water reversion and maximize the upgrades. I was running Imco Powerflows.
