Is it possible to copy a DVD. I have a DVD burner on this computer. What I want to do is rent DVD's and rip them to my hard drive and then burn a copy minus all the garbage. Can this be done? Is their a download available like it is for CD's

I'm in the market for a DVD burner/copier but don't know whichto get: an internal for the puter or a external with a VHS tape copier.

I think there are copy write problems as well as DVD being coded that will prevent copying like most movie VHS tapes.

I'm certain Audio will have the answer when he gets back on.

Anything is possible. How much you want to spend to do it is the real question. Basically there is not easy or cheap way to do it. Guess you will have to dig deep and pay the 20 bucks for a movie

Jon is right by the time you use the software to extract the data from a DVD then encode it to burn your own un copy protected
version. The investment in time for a 2 hour movie is 2-3 hours min plus you need a DVD burner, proper software 4 dollar Blank DVD.
Question is how much is your time worth for a twenty dollar DVD

Now a VCD is a different method I use I download a movie and
simply burn to disc. time to burn 5 min a disc. the download
causes me no time either. Word of caution for the best picture
Just buy the DVD. Downloaded files are of a lower quality.

(2 cd) VCD is the best for free method
cheap quality- Thai or Jap dvd
(3 cd) SVCD is almost dvd quality at 5 feet away from tv.

To encode vcd on a 800mhz 30 gig 384 mb ram:
40 min ripping
7.5-8 hours encoding (set and go to bed)
15 min cutting in half
20 min to burn

on a 80 gig 2.2ghz 512mb ram
40 min ripping
3 hours encoding
10 min cut in half
10 min burn.

Thanks guys but I already have a DVD burner on this computer all I need is a program to rip the video from the DVD. I was able to somehow copy the DVD to the hard drive but it wouldnt copy to a CD properly. Sound is perfect but the picture is delayed and has gaps. Is this the copy guard??? I have ROXIO CD 5 and DAZZLE DVD authoring programs but havn't tried them yet.

I dont what drives your using but I have Cheetah
SCSI 160 15000 rpm & some 10000 rpm
both types are very quick on p4 2.6ghz
I have adaptec uw 2940 if u want it 80mbit/sec
sustained data rate 30mbits/sec if you want it
and some IBM 10gigs ultra 80's
still faster than any IDE 100

Just regulat drives :rolleyeyes:
