Default water pump leaking/ high price gasket

Well guys the circulation pump{on front of engine} started leaking from the weep hole, so I go to the local merc dealer and order a pump, its about 200.00, not to bad, then I ask him does it come with the two gaskets, he checks and say's no, and he gives me a price of 49.00 for two little gaskets, what gives? man is this a typo in his computer, my boat is 2000 model baja h2x with a 454 mag mpi{385 hp} the engine # is OL632971 , anybody have any ideas, how about making some?
Thanks
Mark

Mark,

Go and buy them at the Auto Part store and then go and check and see if they match the one's at the Merc dealer if they do then just put those on. $49.00 !!!! Maybe he read it wrong and it's $4.90??

P.S. - You could buy gasket material they sell it in rolls. And then just cut it with a box cutter to the shape you need. I've done it before for other types of gaskets (i.e. Water neck) Worked fine.

Good Luck,
Angel

That's BS!!! (Almost as bad as a $16.00 spark plug)
Never pay that much for gaskets!

Pantera24'a advice is right on. You can buy rolls of all kinds of gasket material for a few bucks and cut it to shape. Coat it with high-performace gasket sealer and you're all set.

I too have used that stuff on all kinds of applications. No problems. Just use a sharp knife.

That is ridiculous!!!

Go to Autozone or NAPA or whatever and buy them for $.79 each!!!

That is 79 cents, not dollars like the a-holes at Mercruiser!!!
I looked on Autozone.com for your gaskets. No problem!

Check it out~

I have installed several waterpumps this past season. They all came with the gaskets.

It's not Merc, it's your dealer. Merc price is $1.65.
I'd be taking them back!!
And yes, the water pump should include the gaskets per the Merc p/n.
Just a side note: I've installed 2 now and they all (3 total) have leaked at high rpm. Don't bother...

There are 2 differant water pumps for the big block and small block chevy's. The only differance is long or short legs. Merc uses the short leg. I think the only vehicle that used the short pump was the big block early corvette. You might have better luck finding that pump at a NAPA. I it will be alot cheeper than $200.00. Good luck, Doug

I'd check your water pressure! I have run the circulating pumps for 400+ hours with out a leak. My '97 454's ate circulating pumps. It was because of high water pressure not defective pumps.
