Default Are people having fuel system problems in the Merc 250 & 300!b8 engines from bad gas

Are people having fuel system issues on the Merc v8 250 & 300 outboards? I’m buying a pair of 300s for my island hotels passenger boat and a guy I know down here told me he was having issues do to crappy gasoline here in Colombia South America. I was going to install a racor fuel water separator but wanted to see if it was a common problem and what people are doing to resolve it. The boat will make a 4 hour round trip every day of the year so reliability is very important. Thanks in advance for any info, Rm

Default Contaminated Fuel Use

Every motor ever made is having problems with crappy fuel. Get a good filter & make sure theres no water & other junk in it.

Testing for extra ethanol and water can be done halfway quick. No easy way to test for octane loss. Even the $3-$5k octane testers don’t work well.

do the Merc 300s and 450s have knock sensors to prevent damage from bad fuel?
