I’m redoing my ‘02 Prototype (pre-Joker). Im trying to duplicate the spatter effect like you find in Daytona’s using gel coat. Any old Eliminator employees out there that can tell me how they do the spatter effect so we’ll? I’ve experimented with just a brush flicking it, that’s no good. I’ve been told to try a drywall texture hopper or a “dump gun” which is what’s used to spray gelcoat. Any ideas?

Why? All it does is help to camouflage any stress cracks in the gelcoat and stringers.

I’m not a huge fan of the look personally. I think it looks dated…

A prototype is an all foam core hull and stringers, it gets stress cracks all over the place, so hiding them is the whole point. I guess nobody has experience doing this, I’ll keep experimenting I’ll get it eventually. Thanks

I'm not familiar with that boat brand, but I think the technique you are referring to is cobwebbing. We used to use it on custom car paint jobs in the early 1970's. Take an old suction feed spray gun (we used a Binks #7), put in unthinned paint, crank up the line pressure PSI and shoot it on a test panel. We mostly used lacquer back then, but there shouldn't be any reason you couldn't use a PPG or other contemporary paint. You may have to experiment with the viscosity of the paint. When you get the desired result put on a couple of clear top coats. I hope you find this helpful.
