stainless bow "patch"

Silly question. What's behind the stainless "patch" on the bow of my 1999 330SS? Has anybody installed a GPS speedo in place of the origional? I'm trying to stay as stock as poss

Are you talking about one of the stainless steel bow guards or...something else?

Smaller. Midway between the bow eye and the deck. I see it on so many SS's that I'm thinking that it is factory
