Wasn't sure where to post this here or lower units. I've seen prop thrust washers made of bronze and I've seen them made of stainless. Is one preferred over the other. Or does it really matter?

I’d just be happy to figure out where to buy just the thrust washer set, without having to buy a full prop kit.

I'm going the ultimate cheap route and making mine. I manage a production machine shop. So was wondering if any benefit of one material over the other. Can't beat a free drop of material and free machine time.

I am, by no means, and outdrive tech, but I do play a toolmaker on TV....
I would think that AMPCO25 (bronze) would be an excellent option for a thrust bearing. It's about as tough and wear resistant a material as I've ever used for a static bearing surface.
Thanks. Brad.

Anything you got.
Technically it's not a wear item. It rests against the shaft taper on one side and the prop on the other, the prop nut pins it all together, so it all moves in unison.
It never should spin independent of any of it.
With one exception! If someone has a plastic hub propeller and shears the hub then potentially the washer and shaft could spin while the prop stays still.
Take note also.
In relation to Mercury Flo Torque props.
Mercury washers I'd guess are bronze.
Part # 12‑835467 1 is the number given with a plastic hub kit.
Part # 12‑835467 5 is the number given with the steel hub kit.
According to the Mercury Literature, the 12‑835467 5 is hardened.

I definitely can appreciate those that have the knowledge and tools available to make parts, it's a talent and in many cases can be very cost effective but the above listed washers are about $10 on ebay.
I already have too many projects and chores on my plate to not spend that...lol
Would like to see what someone comes up with if they make these.
