Default EOH Titan or Hydrastar - Project

Hello All,
Im trying to decide which EOH system I should go with. First, they are both very hard to find and I think since the last time I looked at these that have skyrocketed in price.

Im looking at the Hydrastar 1600# or the Titan 1500#. Is one recommended over the other and why?

This is going on a triple axle trailer with working surge brakes but they dont seem to be doing much.

Im looking for any suggestions or guidance so I can start purchasing the items I need

Thanks in advance

Personally, I prefer the Hydrastar, but Titan works well also. There is also one made by Dexter, if you're interested. I like the fact that the Hstar is a sealed unit, but that's just my preference. Hydrastar is out of stock most everywhere, so if you find one, it's going to go for a premium. You have brakes on two or three axles? Going to have to either weld your coupler or replace it with a solid one. Unless you have a newer trailer, I would go ahead and run all new brake lines, just to be on the safe side. Not that much more expensive and just takes a little more time. I used Kodiak rubber hoses on my trailer and have had no issues. What are you towing with? GM, Ram or Ford? Factory controller or aftermarket? Could be an issue (an easy fix, but still an issue), depending on vehicle you have.

I went with the Titan BrakeRite. No problems but on my trailer it is was a pita to mount. Had a friend with a machine shop make up a mount. Works great. I really like EOH disc brakes. Surge...not so much.

Thanks for the responses

i will be towing with a Ford. All 3 axles have brakes. I was planning on going with a aftermarket controller with prodigy or 1 I recently saw on OSO in another thread that is just a knob.

I don’t do that much towing in my opinion maybe 20 miles each way, but would like the consistency and safety of the EOH. Also I live in miami so it’s all flat road

I did find a Hstar and have been gravitating to this unit since it’s sealed. I found one for $800 with controller, which is surprising.

I see there are 2 styles for hstar Marine and I guess regular. When I first looked at these units years agoI do t recall seeing a marine version, so I am not really sure the extra money is needed.

Thanks for the tip on the brake lines I will check them out.

I’m also thinking maybe waiting til this supply chain issue resolved itself and pricing comes down a little.

No built in factory controller? If you have one, why not use it? If not, aftermarket is is. Depending on the year of your truck, later model vehicles with EOH will work as is with a factory controller. Some of the earlier year models have to have a CAM (controller assist module) or a couple of electric brake magnets wired in to get the controller to recognize the system. With that any truck will handle the EOH system. Most of the aftermarket controllers will work as is with the EOH system.

I know you don't have a lot of choices right now, but if you can find the "plug and play" version of Hstar (or Titan for that matter), it is very, very easy to hook up. No splicing, or butt connectors, etc., all deutsch connectors. Just plug it up and go. I assume you have disc brakes, since you are talking of using the #1600. That is a plus in itself. Be sure to bleed all the old fluid out of the lines.

If you do this, you will love the EOH, even on short drives. Good luck.

I was told by the EOH brake engineers not to use rubber hose the length of the trailer because of expansion of hose and that causes a less responsive braking. I used stainless steel line down each side of trailer with a tee at each axle for the rubber brake hose to caliper.

This all sounds like great ideas and suggestions thanks. I have an older truck and have the wiring already there so I can easily install a Ford controller but think the aftermarket maybe better.

It would be nice for a plug and Play unit, but these devices are very hard to find, and I am pretty knowledgeable regarding electronics and such. The trailer is 3 axle 6 disc brake.

Also, thinking to maybe wait it out til supply returns to normal and hoping pricing comes down.

Has anyone used Trailer Parts 4U, Trailer Parts 4U | Dexter Axles | Hydrastar | Dexter Parts | Brakes | Electric | Hydraulic, Springs

They seem to have a 1600# Hydrastar with a controller battery etc. I have tried to call them but no answer. I am not sure how legitimate this website is, or if this is too good to be true.
