Hi guys.
6 years in may i bought my chriscat project ! did not move forward a lot but thats not a problem i was in no rush. I basically emptied the boat, split it in half removing deck and started removing the transom wood that was not really rotten but had some discoloration from water intrusion...
Since i had it, i took my humidity tester and wrote everywhere on the side of the boat each reading that was not zero, for each foot left and right top to bottom.
I did not do it for the transom since i knew i would remove it.
So, 1-2 weeks ago a ground the delamination in the transom fiberglass. i found some material i could not tell what is was... kinda in between the layers of fiberglass...kinda like a glue, or a filler, or some type of foam... not sure and could not tell...
yesterday night i was playing on the boat again. figured i would use the moisture meter on the transom to confirm i am at 0 % like it usually is the case!
WRONG !!!
Man was i surprised... i get zero where i ground. but get 40-60 in some area right in the middle of transom !
so i looked at the reading on the side. Found out where it is not zero, it is mostly where it is thicker, so and dug into this to find the hull sides are cored either by balsa, but i think it might be divinycell since second half year in 85 they switched to divinycell... it don't show or feel humid at all, but i got some readings only where the core is...
So, back thinking about the transom, i am starting to wonder if there is not a very thin layer of coring material leading to read false humidity ??? Removing the thru hull bottom water pick up, i also found it is 2 inches thick !!! that's what i call solid !!!
so, i am kinda lost with my transom... last thing i want, is put in a new coosa transom and have moisture reading in a futur survey !!!
starting to think to grind all that last inside layer out as well as the ''beige material'' so i am at 0 reading
i will post pictures in the next post, i am on computer and pictures are on my phone...
any resto guru went thru this?
