2003 Outlaw 33 twin 496ho's BRAVO 1 outdrives
Had an issue happen yesterday, now getting a knocking sound almost sounds like the engine is knocking but I'm 90% sure it's the outdrive (pulling boat home tomorrow). Knocking sound is consistent constant, same in gear or neutral. Revving in neutral the knocking speed increases with engine rpm (only brought it up to like 1100rpm). Seems I made some mistakes that might do damage to an outdrive. Any ideas what could have broke?
Possibilities that caused damage:
1. Shutting engine down while still in gear, engine was at idle speed.
2. limping it back with one engine off, was in neutral.
3. Something broke in the outdrive and cause the belt to jump off?
I was doing about 60mph when something happened, bring the boat to a stop checked gauges, had oil pressure and temps were initially good. Looked at temp as I raised the hatch, maybe 5secs after temp was okay, now the temp gauge was maxed out. Quickly shut the engine off, but forgot to move shifter to neutral first. (Could that have broken something?) Didn't have tools to get the belt back on, so limped back to shore at 8mph on one engine. (Also heard that may have broken something on the outdrive that wasn't running).

From: ankeny,ia.
Being the belt came off, take the belt back off, start it and see if the noise
is still present, if so, check the sea pump, belt tensioner, p/s pump,
alternator and recirculating pump.
Nothing going south in the outdrive would have made it shuck the belt.

I'll do that today, it may have also slipped off from being too loose. This was it's second run since taking the belt off to remove the sea pump to change the impeller.

1. shutting down with bravo in gear will not hurt the outdrive.
2. limping back home on one motor will not hurt either outdrive.
not totally discounting a locked drive could make your belt jump but siezed drives typically take out couplers, transom plates, transom assemblies, etc.
when I think belt jumped I think siezed pulleys, pulleys not aligned, bad bearings, incorrect tension, or something in top/low end resisting rotation

Going to have the mechanic that did head gaskets listen to it this afternoon to it to see if he knows what it is.

yeah, it seems like it's most likely the engine. We took the oil filter off and checked the dip stick, no metal shavings. Oil pressure was around 35. Doesn't seem to idle rough, not able to feel anything thumping or hanging when feeling the engine. Only thing we were able to notice is the knocking.

trying to figure out the cause and effect.
1. what threw the belt?
2. Was the belt and overheating that caused the knock? Or was it knocking before?

starts and runs, only noticeable symptom is the knocking noise as it idles. Wasn't knocking before throwing the belt, it's pretty loud, I definitely would've heard the knock at 4k rpm.
