Default Outdrive locking up coming off of full throttle run

When I do a pass if I back out of the throttle very slow everything is fine, but if I pull back on the sticks more than a tiny bit and put the hull back in the water the boat gets a weird sensation like it is diesel it or the outdrive is locking up? The Roma bounce all over the place and a loose speed very quickly. If I let it come down to idle I can get back into it normally. Has anybody else’s experienced something similar? 26 daytona.

This might sound off wall but is it a D/P outdrive ?
Chopping the throttle on one is like putting the brakes on on a car compared to single prop units.

If you have thru hull exhaust make sure your flappers are still intact if you slow down to fast water could rush back up into engine.

If you’re pull back substantially from wide open, the propshaft speed will exceed the input shaft speed and the clutch will unlock and start pushing against the shift fork (and cam) which then will rub against the bump ring on the opposite driven gear which will make the shift fork rattle pretty badly.

Is this what you’re experiencing?

This was my guess too. I've experienced it also. Just don't cut the throttles so fast and it won't happen.

Hate to hijack, but is there any scenario similar to this that can make it seem like it pops into neutral? I have had situations where I'm chopping the throttle on and off and suddenly it seems like the pop blows out or it goes into neutral, engine revs freely, and I can't get any bite until I return to idle and slow back down.

I would think when you our chopping you are creating air and then cavitation
