Currently have a 91 mirage 217 and i think it might be better if i got a different boat to hop up.
What other options are like the mirage style between 22 and 26ft. I love the mirage style but because of the volvo outdrive i am limited on props.
I found a perfect 98 272 with a 580hp 525 chevy with 20 hrs and the rest of the boat is just like new or even better its that clean. How hard is it to get the 272 to do 75?
Or maybe other options, offshore style with cuddy and a big block chevy no bigger than 27 and a single engine.

25/26 Baja outlaw, formula 271 fastech come to mind but neither will do 75 stock.

How fast do they claim it goes?…..they run low 60’s with a 502 mpi, I would
think if it has 150 hp more than a 502 mpi it should be close to 75

Older guy, he said 70 with the all around prop and 74 with the fast prop.

I had a 2001 272 boss with a 502mpi . I put exhaust and a air cleaner on it with a 25 3 blade the best I ran was 72-73 . motor was stock 415hp. Great fun boat.

Since you asked for suggestions of other options, I will always toss this out there....

We have a PQ 280 (27'6" beam length) with a mechanically stock 496HO, M1 ProCharger (3 lbs @ WOT) and Whipple's stage 2 ECM flash. ProCharger advertises this 496HO combo at 615HP. Some suggest that is high, and maybe as low as 500HP. Don't know. Haven't dyno'd it. We turn a Bravo28 prop and run a reliable 75-77GPS, depending on factors, and have seen a high of 78, and it will still pull my fat azz out on a slalom without a prop change. I think I can get 80 out of it with the right prop. Stock engine this boat will typically have a Bravo26 and will run 65 or so. I've seen videos of them running solid and stable at 85. I think the single stepped hull really helps. You'll also find more cockpit area and more cuddy area than in the 272; we took a sea trial in one before buying the PQ. If you can find one with aftermarket power, or are inclined to build it, you really can't go wrong with the 280.

From my experience, when you are around the 70 mph mark it takes about 20hp to gain 1 mph on a hull that wasn't really designed to go fast. 80 mph is a wall that is tough to break through with these types of hulls. I would say that it would take around 650hp to run 75 in a Baja 272 with a normal load of fuel, people and gear on board, but then you just start breaking drives.

Great advice guys, btw rull of thumb on boost power gain is 7% gain per pound of boost from what the engine made NA. SO A MAG ho 496 425 hp will gain around 30 hp per pound boost. I've proved this math over and over.

I wonder if that's the math that ProCharger used to establish their advertised number...... It certainly matches up.

Like I said, I have no idea what we are actually getting from the engine. It was a factory build from PQ, and I have no record of any dyno time. I only know we are pulling more prop and running 10-15MPH faster than the same boat with the same engine NA.
