I just bought a 1980 Sutphen 20. The transom and stringers were done by a very reputable shop as well as a brand new fuel tank. The boat has not been rigged or used since work was done, they did cut for the drive. I take a bunch of pictures as I finish this before next season. I’m either powering with Merc 350 MPI 300 Hp or a Merc 6.2 I think 340 Hp. What can anyone tell me about these ? Speed ? How are they in 1-2 footers. I was looking at 22 Donzi’s and this popped up. I’ve been told they run and handle better than the Donzi. I really like the looks and construction of the boat. I already have a 34 Sportfisherman as a primary boat, this will be used to play around. Thanks

Good luck with the balance of the restoration, it sounds like you'll have a really nice boat. I think you're on the right track with a SBC vs a BBC, it'll deliver a better overall ride. With 340 HP the boat should run 70 mph or better. They handle waves quite well and you can carry a lot of speed through lake chop but they don't have a lot of freeboard or really deep V so large waves will slow you down and big waves will have you turn around.

Yeah I’m excited to get this all done, the major expensive work is already done. I just need to install the motor and drive and finish the interior. I’ve built and installed many engines, I have a 350 MPI and a 6.2 MPI sitting in my shop. I buy and sell marine engines as they pop up. All the original stainless hardware on the boat is perfect no corrosion, it looks like quality stuff. I’ll be happy with any numbers over 60 mph, but reliable power is just as important to me. Merc MPI stock power is all I’m interested in, a 496 MPI could be in the future. I also have an older carbureted 350 with a Weiand 141 blower, I don’t think it’s going to be a reliable engine.
