welding up the surge brake actuator- What places
#1
Ill be converting a triple axle Eagle trailer over to EOH brakes very soon, and wondering if anybody has pictures of how they welded up their old actuator. I saw how Brad Christy did his and am very impressed. Do I need to remove the old actuator, shocks and rollers and then do shim plates like he did? Or can I just put weight on it in the extended position and weld every seam I can see?
My old surge brake is a Dico titan like this

I was thinking of taking the top rollers off and welding the sides completely and as much of the top and bottom near the front as I can get to. Or should I do something different?

When I did mine, I welded it where you marked it in red, but I also welded the backside that runs inside the hitch. To do that, I actually cut the entire actuator almost in half, getting rid of the portion where the master cylinder is located. Then then exposed the inner part I mention that slides under the rollers. That way the hitch was welded both front and backside. Hope that made sense. I can send photos if you give me a cell number.

I just completely unbolted and took my old surge system off and bolted a ball hitch receiver in its place when I converted over to the EOH system. If you can go that route it would be much easier than welding up/locking out the old surge system.

Hi phughes69,
Is this for a steel trailer? If so, yes, you can weld the coupler sleeve at the red line you indicated. In lieu of welding, some customers report success through bolting the outer body and the inner coupler sleeve, to use the surge actuator as just a coupler.
If it's for an aluminum trailer, we recommend unbolting the surge actuator and replacing it with a bolt on coupler.
