Default 1985 mercruiser 3.0 alpha 1 gen 1 out drive engines bad what engines will fit

This could have already been asked was easier to repost than sort through 200+ threads 😅

Trying to see what's interchangeable with as little work possible I've found a lot of mercruiser 3.0 engines but they are outrageous on the prices would much rather put a bigger gm engine in it if it's a lot cheaper I also have a few gm engines laying around just not very knowledgeable in the interchangeability of the marine world I've heard some gm engines fit right in 🤷‍♂️. Thanks, 🙏

Are you able to do the work? The Alpha 1 drive & bellhousing should fit a sbc or a V6 4.3L.

The Vee engines use engine mounts on the sides...vs the front 3.0l engine mount system.

Lots of cost involved to refit like exh manifolds etc. It should be all 2pcs rear main flywheel and coupler etc.as it's pre '86.

You'll also have the issue of an Alpha 1 drive with a higher in/out ratio. You'd likelyhave to re-prop IOT use the extra power of a 5.7L.

Of course, you would have to go with through hull exhaust, or buy the Y attachment to replace the single side 3.0.
