I'm a total noob in all this so bear with me. I've been reading this site for years but never had a reason to post until recently. I have a 1972 Chris Craft XK 22 with a bad SBC and a volvo penta 270 in it. I recently purchased a 1986 formula 311 with two good 454s connected to TRS outdrives. What is it going to take to put the 454 into the XK? The VP is rebuilt and ready to go and so is the 454. I tried searching but I'm not exactly sure how to frame the search to get back the right results.

Are you going to be doing your own work? You want to take the Magnum 330HP? 454 out of the 311 and place it into the CC XK22? Keeping the 270 drive and mating it to the 454?
What are your plans for the 311? What year is the 311? Likely you have the BW 72 transmissions. The 454s & BBC in general are the best power for the 311. SBCs are a little bit lighter, and weaker in every respect.
The 270 sould be able to take the 454 power. Just prop it on the higher rpm, to avoid lugging/loading the drive.
BBCs are of course longer than the SBC. Jow much room is in the engine bay to the front bulkhead? You have to consider the exhaust. Dod you have thru-hull? The 454 exh manifolds will have to lign up with the Volvo 270 Y pipe etc.
Realistically, it's likely far easier getting the 350 SBC rebuilt, or finding another 350 donor marine engine and just replace it.
If you have to rely on other people or pay a shop to do it...it's not worth the costs.
You'll need a 270 coupler that will fit the 454 flywheel. The 270 bellhousing will mate up to the 454.
For searching...just use the convert volvo 270 boat from sbc to bbc.
If you want to put the TRS drive and BBC into the CC XK22, it likely won't fit into the engine bay. It's quite a long package.

Thanks for the response. The 311 was involved in a fire outside of the hull. It burned the fiberglass pretty good but didn’t affect the interior. I’m going to be doing all the work. There is plenty of room in front of the engine, maybe 2’? Definitely not intending on using any of the TRS stuff.

24" is a lot of room.
The 454 and 350 blocks generally have the same fitment. Obviously the bib block is wider, taller and longer, but the engine mount holes and locarions are the same.
So the 454 will likely extend lower into you engine bay, and be taller as well as longer.
Not much to the 454s...just take care in setting up the 350 Volvo parts to make sure they fit the 454.

The vp 270 will use the smaller 12 3/4 flywheel(153 tooth), you may want to consider finding the fairly rare 280 power trim transome shield or move up to a 290 plate for power trim, the 270 do not have power trim. Also check the gear ratio v8 had a 1.61, even better find a duo prop lower unit and bolt it on, probably a 1.78 ratio duo prop would be best.
