Default adapting a SSM III lower to a TRS upper

As we all know there are many more TRS boats than SSM boats. I have a boat that originally had SSM II drives and they blew up. I replaced them with TRS, but they dont have the visual look. since the weak link in the TRS is the lower gears, has anyone contemplated adapting a SSM III lower to a TRS upper with a machined plate? My brain in the early morning fog thinks this might be a better expendature than reglassing a TRS transom and finding a pair of SSM III transom assemblies and drives
