Before I tear into it just want some thoughts.
it’s got Holley 800 or 850 on it can’t remember lol.
anyways when idleing or “ trying to “ it’s absolutely DUMPING fuel into the carb. Even when it dies it’s still dripping fuel into it when looking down into the carb with the breather off.
it’ll start when I pin the throttle and let it breath and quickly put it into gear and go it’s fine. I have to keep the RPMS way up to keep her going.
stuck float? Bad accelerator pump? Bad fuel pump diaphragm? ( it’s a belt driven pump ). I know info is a little vague but that’s what I got. I’m sorry

Mine does that every 3 years or so. I'm running some old Holleys that don't have back-fire protection for the power valves. One pop back thru the carb and I'm replacing a power valve. Carry a couple of spares with me.
Next most likely would be trash stuck in the needle/seat assy preventing the fuel from being shut off when float bowl fills.

It’s a Holley. By the time you wrote the OP you could have it apart. Not quite, but it's quick snd easy. Always get a new needle and seat and always clean out every little passage both ways with carb cleaner with red straw against each hole. A shot of compressed air thru each hole both ways after sprayed is good practice.
If fuel is running out of the vent tube, the needle and seat is stuck open.

im glad you said backfire. That same morning I had a nasty backfire when i first fired it that day. It then sat that Friday night and I took it out that Saturday afternoon all seemed fine leaving the marina and through the no wake zone. I ran about 10-15 miles up the lake and when I came off plane that’s when it stopped running and acting up. Totally forgot about that. So maybe an accelerator pump?

My experience has been a blown power valve will start causing overly rich mixture issues immediately after the backfire. If it started acting up after a long run, trash in the needle/seat assy sounds more likely. Either way, a rebuild kit should have the parts to address both these possibilities and a few more..

Needle and seat assembly would be my first guess
