Question porpoising and chine walking.....what cause's it??

this is more directed at people who build boats like Sharky and Steve1 but its open to all comments...

So i was wondering...what causes the two and how can it be avoided....both during and after the boat is built? Is it more of a weight/balance thing? is part of it due to worksmanship on the hull... i.e. hook/rocker in the hull??? Just curious.

SOME BOATS AT SPEED START LETTING THE DRIVE OR DRIVES START SWAYING BACK AN FORTH WITCH WILL GET WORSE AND WORSE AS YOU GO FASTER,, WITH OUT HYD. STEERING ,SO AD HYD STEERING AND ALOT OF TIMES IT WILL CORRECT THIS CHINE WALKING

388 'S HUSTLERS DO IT DUE TO TO MUCH LIFT BUILT IN THE HULL TO GET IT TO RUN IN THE 80'S ,,,,,,,A WHILE RIDE AFTER 95 EVEN WITH STEERING

Bobby, how can a boat have too much lift? I guess there has to be a compimise but i thought the less wetted surface the better.....to a point ofcourse....

Look at those hydros. You can see to much lift in them as the back flip over!!

As cig1 said, mostly corrected in trim.

Usually, it's caused by this specific logo on the side, although, just removing the logo doesn't seem to help.

Happens alot when people add extension boxes and mess up the CG of the boat... There is a 38' TG at the lake that has boxes and when running above 70mph it porpoises so bad that it will actually start leaving the water on its own... even when the water is like glass..... JBK can vouch for this for he has witnessed it as well....

Tbone,
I think I know who you're talking about.
I have to agree. It's been my experience the hull design, CG, drive height, trim angle, and prop choice can all affect porpoising.

That Gun can be corrected ....

Change X-dim
or
Larger dia props
or
Adj trim
