Default Water pump discussion (not sea water pump)

okay
I need 2 water pumps
I see the mercruiserparts site has them for 7 thosand bones
no thanks
someone has to have these things cheaper
are the big block short style or big block long style off a car the same?
are the impellors on a car one able to handle fresh water boat stuff?
or is this a bad idea and just take it up the pooper and pay it?
What do you all think?

The auto pumps will work fine but not for long. The marine pumps have a stainless backing plate, brass impeller, and better seals. The first two items are important because of corosion. The seals on a marine pump seem to cope better with the sustained high rpm that a boat motor sees. I have also heard that the marine pumps impeller is better designed not to cavitate at high rpm.

Plan on changing the auto pumps once a year if you boat in the salt. Watch the weep holes on the front and replace as soon as you see a drip so you wont become stranded or fill your bilge with sea water while under way. It wont be long before they start to leak.

My local Merc dealer sells an aftermarket marine water pump for about half the cost of the Merc. I have had good luck with them. Merc had some problems with their pumps a while back so I switched to the other one and never looked back.

if you have a sea pump get rid of the recirculating and all the extra not needed plumbing and get a crossover. they are about $265.00 and they don't break. no belts or hoses on extra pump on leak.

sea Hawk I would get a crossover but then I would have to get all new belts and hoses and quite frankly this boat is not worth it.
If the new owner wants to fuss with all of that then so be it
I have my sights right now set on something else and im just at this point trying to get this to run and get it out there this summer
after which I am working on the wife to nod yes to the 40 fountain with twin 800's in it.
she is starting to bite I think, it has an ENCLOSED HEAD AND AIR CONDITIONING!!! She likes that part
Me, the twin 540's with weiand huffers on top, SSM#3's, dry exhaust, K planes, and full hydraulic steering and its sheer overall size and nice airbrushing is what has my attention!!!
close to triple digits in speed yet can take a dump on it during the weekend.
Seems to suit all parties involved!

Cal, Their dyno is broken again
I spoke to Lisa the other day, she is going to call me back when they get it fixed.
Im hoping BEFORE the ac boat show
Have to get some parts before dyno day #2 as well
I am nervous, if this engine makes more power (noticeable) than engine #1 im so boned!
Ill let you know when dyno day is scheduled for Cal
Jason

PS here is the fountain im sort of eyeing up at the moment
