Default pyro meter

I was just surfing today, for stuff for my Dura Max and read that your turbo will last longer if ya let it cool to 300 degrees before shutting down the motor, they said to keep it between 300 and 1200 degrees when running, temps over that amount will do damage in seconds. This is my first diesel and know absolutely nuttin about them, so with reading that I'm thinking a pyro-meter would be a good investment if I was to get one of those re-programmers just so I don't screw nuttin up.
