I just DON"T want to be sitting on the outside when the wake comes by.....
Cool picture. Hope the planes (and dinnerware) are tied down.

I remember seeing video like that from a Discovery show about the building of a Nimitz-class carrier. Unreal when they took it for sea trials - think about the numbers:
1100 ft long, 97,000 tons displacement, 20 stories from the waterline to the top of the tower, top end better than 30 knots (roughly 40 mph) - can you imagine this big motherf****** tearing by at 40 mph? Jeebus!

No aircraft onboard for this. As Dockrocker said it's during sea trials and also it IS the NImitz (CVN-68) which is currently based in Washington state. I made three deployments on Nimitz from 1977-1981 while assigned to an F-14 squadron VF-84 (Jolly Rogers)...

Not sure if this was the first or secong turn but as I remember they go from a full speed ahead to a hard in one direction to a hard in the other. From on deck it looked like it was going to go over. It is amazing how fast those things are.

While the official top speed is classified ("over 30 knots" is the official word...), I've heard that they need to have a wind speed of ~30 knots over the deck to conduct flight operations. So, on a calm day, the ship's speed has to provide all of that 30 knot wind.
Not sure if that's true or not, but it sounded plausible to me...
