Oil - Synthetic vs Petrolium w/HP500's?
#1
Hello all,
I'm running HP500's, which have roller cams, lifters, and rockers.
I read something in Powerboat some time ago where they recommended against using synthetic oil due to unusual cam and lifter wear. Apparently, the syn's are just too slippery.
Has anyone actually experienced these "unusual" wear patterns? I've always been a Mobil 1 fan, but I'd prefer to keep the motors for a while.
Any opinions?
Thanks,
Brian

from what I have seen in the auto field{mercedes benz tech] that is not a problem today, we started using mobil1 in the late 80's and we had cam wear, but today's synthetic oil is improved, we do not see the wear problems anymore, and all new Mercedes from 2000 and newer come with mobil-1 from the factory,

What I read....It is so slippery that the wheels slide instead of
rolling on the cam...
Anybody ever had an oil related problem using GOOD quality oil
with reguler oil changes ?? Not me !
Kendall racing oil...40 wt.

The new M/B's ,Corvettes ,ect come with it and most racing is done with it do to its extreme advantages in protection !!Noting special is done on vettes ect. to keep wheels tuning ,(old wives tale) old old ,, to much pressure to keep the wheel from sliding I've never seen a motor ever with this problem ,,,,race teams would not begin to use it if it was a problem with the millions at stake in racing ,
Any syn is much better than conv. due to the base stock they start with,,ect.
DON"T FALL FOR THIS OLD WIVES TALE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next question...
Anyone know of a supplier online where I can find the red-cap Mobil 1 for sale by the gallon at a decent price?
The consensus here tells me to go with it.
Thanks everyone!

Oil change intervals are far more important than what you put in it. An HP500 is stressed more than a 454/310hp, but is still not stressed anywhere near its components' design limits. For this reason, a conventional lube will perform well. Personally, I use synthetic or synthetic blend in all my stuff, but it's just for peace of mind rather than by necessity.
When the blowers go on, I say strictly synthetic. Over 6000 rpm: strictly synthetic. Drives: strictly synthetic (since they are at the design limit to begin with).
But once again, changeout intervals are more important than what goes in (when taking about a stock motor).
