Question 1994 mercruiser 454 question

What are some of the most basic modifications I can do to bump up the horse power on a 1994 merc. 454 not mag. If it was a choice between putting threw hull exhaust on or doing the k&n filter with the spacer between the carb for pvc work what would you guys do first?

Probably nothing you'll notice.

i hear k&n filters are good for 5-10 hp.

won't be noticeable on the speedo. I would also think the exhaust change won't make a noticabe difference on the speedo. You might get a better sound out of it though.

If you are doing a cam change or heads or a blower that is when changing the exhuatst will benefit you.

Nothing really gains you any performance on top end untill you change the heads and cam. Trust me I tried on a 1995 7.4 which is the correct way to refer to your engine. I changed the flame arrestor, carb, intake, and exhaust and saw maybe 1 mph on top end. Changed the heads and cam the next year and gained about 10 mph. You can find a set of used rectangular port heads for around 500-700. New intake for the heads for around 250. New cam and lifters for around 350 and your there, almost. To make the engine breath right you now need to change the exhaust 1500-3000.

Speed cost money... How fast do you want to go?
