Bought a new boat lift that is galvanized. Am doing some mods to it that required cutting and drilling. What is best way to seal the exposed steel now to prevent from rusting? These areas will be under water when lift is lowered. I talked to a plating buisness about just redipping the ends and they said the complete part has to be sandblasted back to raw steel and recoated. The size of these parts make this not an option.

I'll take a stab at it. Use some zinc chromate primer. Then spray with cold galvanize paint.

Go to a welding supplier- there is a product called Galvo-weld that is a zinc alloy bar and is made for repairing galvanized structures. You heat the exposed steel and rub the bar onto the exposed metal. It will melt onto the steel and results in a repair comparable to the original galvanizing.

If you don't have Acetylene torches tell the supplier what you are doing, and see if you can use mapp gas or propane.

I'm not sure but I seem to remember a spray type repair on the market. It was a long time ago, don't know if it's still available.
