I'll take a shot at some of these:

I don't think that you're going to get a definitive answer about max hp/rpm for either drive. It's just not that simple.

IMHO you should not run an alpha behind a big block. Merc did for a while and stopped because it was not reliable. The torque of a big block kills them.

The Alpha SS is not a gen II. The ss is interchangeable with the alpha, the gen II is not.

I had 330 going through an alpha for 10 yrs on a 4500 lbs boat. Never broke it.

I replaced it with a bravo 1.5 and 500hp, then 600, then went to a 1.36 with 850hp. no problems

My dad runs an Alpha SS on a 19.5' Baja with around 450 to 500 HP naturally aspirated and he also runs a 100 HP nitrous kit. The boat does 81 natural and 86 on the gas and the RPM's are 6000 WOT natural and 6400 on the gas. We are expecting more HP this season with the mods we are currently working on. We have run the SS for 7 years and haven't had any problems. On small boats the Alpha drives will do OK with some extra HP, as long as you stay away from wave jumping or plowing. For that matter 500 HP will break Bravos if too much wave plowing is done with heavy boats. BTW the Alpha SS is an awesome performing drive for small boats like my dads. Travis needs one on his 18 footer!!

This year I will be running around 515hp n/a 383 around 5800 to 6000 rpm. I ran the **** outta of it last year with my old motor ( 400-410hp) 5400 rpm and never hurt it. The boat is around 3000 lbs, i would load it with six people and ream the **** outta it

Just use common sense and you be fine.

The SS has a shorter shaft and a CLE.

The general consensus is 300 hp Alpha and 500 hp Bravo. This is just a guideline and generally accepted, there are always exceptions.

Hey guys just saw the thread and its along the lines of my questions so I'll ask it. 30' Oceanpacer Sutphen...TRS (possibly ss2m) drives...525-550hps...5200lbs...1983 so no step or pad...motors WILL spin and make juice to 6500-7000(the Hp ratings are for around 5000-5200 rpm, the heads and motor will flow ALOT more but the concern for limits in trannys and drives holds them down)...where should I set my ball park to be as far as rpm and therefore, horsepower. I'd be running #5s with spinelli's, but I'm a working stiff, so run what I brung. Just for gigles, the motor maker gave me a number in the neighborhood of 610-625hp for a spin at 6500-7000rpm.
