Default What kind of grease ???

I was wondering with the talk of spun couplers and all of the spring preps going on what grease is the best for all around the boat or do the different areas require different grease?

Drive couplers
Gimbal bearings
Prop shafts
Trailer tongue, Jack and wheel bearings

And of course anything I missed

Without going into all the different areas that require various greases, it should be noted that it IS important to use something specifically designated as SPLINE GREASE when assembling the drive splines into the drive coupler. Available from Merc. or Sierra.

OK so I buy Spline grease for the coupler? and where and what brand should I buy? Do I just go to West Marine? Do I look for waterproof or Synthetic? Do I find what I need at NAPA?
Sorry it may seem like a simple thing but I would like to use the right product for the proper application and not pump the red stuff that I have been buying into everything (bought it for the trailer jack).

Thanks Scott

Quicksilver 2-4-C lubicant is best for most uses on your engine/outdrive: Driveshaft splines, propshaft splines, any fittings, etc.

Wheel bearings require wheel bearing grease (it's thicker, and kind of "stringy"). It holds up much better than anything else.

I use the 2-4-C (available at any marina) on everything for the boat and a high temp synthetic from TRC (very good stuff) for my trailer. Any high temp or basically (thick and stringy) grease will work for wheel bearings. Sometimes you can find TRC (Texas Refinery Corp) at Napa sometimes you can't just depends on the store.

Mercury will tell yor NOT to use 2-4-C for the coupler drive splines. Your Merc. dealer should have and be able to sell you their spline grease and the Sierra product should be available from Boat US or West Marine. The Merc part # for their drive coupler spline grease is - 92-802869 Q1. And as I indicated earlier, the wrong stuff used here will likely lead to early failier even ir your alignment is good Later --- Jer

I use only what merc sells, why take a chance. not like you are going to go faster or anything. You buy it once should have enough for 5 seasons easy. Plus I have a merc dealer right arround the block.

Spline and coupler grease is one type.

Gimble bearing and U-Joint grease is another.

I can give you numbers tomorrow, My manual is at the office.
