Question What tools do you keep on your boat?

OK, there's been some talk about tools lately. I don't do much of my own mechanical work but can do minor stuff.

Do you guys carry good tools on the boat?

What tools do you carry (how extensive a set)?

How do you protect them from the elements of boating?

I could rebuild my motor in the water if I wanted to. I may break down but I will get back without tow.

Cell phone, VHF, and $$. Actually duct tape and tie wraps have come to my rescue a few times. I keep cheepo tool set on board too. It seems like usually a part goes bad and if you don't have a spare, all the tools in the world won't help.

I also keep the crapsman kit in a plastic box. It was $100 but has paid for itself. I keep a set of electrical stuff, a test light, and zip ties. So far I have not been towed and I use the tools more for others than myself. Spark Plugs and a Cap and Rotor are an also must. I have made a test light with an auto bulb, tape and two wires in a pinch. GHL, on that wrench, make sure you move up the torque in small amounts, don't just torque to specs. It helps to clean the treads and use a lubricant for the best readings but going slow will do in most cases. Keep it unloaded at all times and keep it protected from hits and weather. They are invaluable.

I got so frustrated with never having the right tool. So I stopped carrying tools. Now I know that I don't have the right one.
