Anybody want to guess what they want to charge me for this???

Finally got the invoice from Towboat US. Can you guess how much they are sticking me for? Keep in mind, it was about a 12 mile tow, but they ran out of gas (which added and hour or so, meanwhile the boat sank to the bottom), then they damaged quite a bit of glass while trying to crane it out.

I can only imagine!! We had a boat towed in last week at the SBI race. The boat was sinking, it was about 3 miles to tow it. They wanted $4500.00!!!! They said they saved the boat!! Beleive me, the bill was settled for a lot less than that!
No, it was not the Donzi ZR, I had a blast racing that! Thanks for the advise!!!!

They are calling it a salvage. You all are very close. $4,500.00, but apparently there was another boat that attempted to tow/salvage it first. I assume they will be coming for money as well. I guess I'm just a bit naive when it comes to this sort of thing. I wouldn't imagine that the tow would cost more than repairing the drives and engines combined!

dude!...it ALWAYS the first question you should ask a tow boat....this IS a tow and NOT a salvage right???!!!....it being a salvage,,,,it falls under a different set of laws!....better look into it bro!....is your ass going to be in marathon or what!!!???

I didn't get much say in the matter. When I left the scene on the WaveRunner with the orange sled, it looked to me like a volunteer turn boat had a line on it. After that, I think Sea Tow took it for a while, then somehow Towboat US gets involved.
Maybe I should just drive it back myself next time!
Looks like Marathon is not going to be possible. Engines, drives, and boat are all in different locations, and none of the above are totally completed yet.

Just: For 4500, they either cut you a deal or it was an exceptionally cheap boat.
"Salvage" is governed by ancient Admiralty law. The salvager gets a part of the ship for his efforts. They usually start at 10% and go up to 50%, depending on the complexity of the job and the dangers involved.

Also, one of the tenets of salvage is "No cure - no pay." If the initial guy tried but was unsuccessful: No cure, no pay. Being not entitled to money doesn't mean he won't try.

I sounds like a loop-hole that allows the tow companies to take advantage of unsuspecting boobs like myself!
I don't think this meets the qualifications for a salvage, however:
Crew in danger: nope, we were already on the beach
Environment in danger: can't imagine the submerged boat doing any more damage -- nothing was leaking to my knowledge
Danger to the boat itself: 30 feet of water with a 38' boat (floating vertically) -- not much danger there, in fact, I think it was more or less stuck that way
Oh well, I'll just add this to the total of my very expensive lesson.
