Whats involved? Can a tool be just plugged in and read, or do motors have to be running?

They do not have to be running but the computer needs power. That means as a minimum that the battery is connected and you may also have to put the ignition on.

Ign. must be turned on to read hours on scan tool. On multi engines, you can select which one you're reading on the scan tool. If you need the scan tool, let me know.
