Default How can you tell Kevlar from fiberglass

I had a few boats in My time and have noticed differences in the color of the fiberglass layup where it wouldn't be covered with paint or gelcoat. I had a Cigarette that was carbon fiber and it was black. Had and Obsession and it was a pinkish red color. My present boat shows a yellowish colored laminate could this be Kevlar layup?...............gofastpilot

I also am interested in knowing this. When did they start using kevlar?

Do a search there was some one asking about this about two or so months ago. I think they had a Cig. It may have been in the general discusion.

Kevlar was always a bit more "yellowish" laid up than glass. If you can find some loose strands inside somewhere and can cut them with a standard shear or scissor, then you have fiberglass. It will takes a carbide shear to cut Kevlar strands. --- Jer

on a long hull, rap the hull sides with the side of your fist, up near the cabin. if it sounds like a drum, odds are it's kevlar. if it just sounds solid and "dead", it's probably only 'glass. just my.02.
