TRS Drives/lowers

Hey Fobes Sutphil, Sutphen 30

Hey guys...where has everybody been? I've got a cituation that needs to be fixed ASAP. Over the winter, the LITTLE crack around my prop nut area of my TRS drive grew...about 5 inches. Past the bearing housing and spidered up the side of the lower. I was going to have the crack repaired as well as new skegs and some case corrosion repaired to both drives. Now, I really think the crack is beyond repair. Over the winter, the basement was a little damp and the salt just swelled that split wide open. Bill, I'm gonna give you a ring by the weekend to see about your TRS drives, as well as try to find some lowers for sale. I'd obviously like to save some dough for other things and do new lowers, but I wanted to see what the opinions were. Any suggestions fellas??

Hey Darkhorse468: I repaired a crack on mine with Marinetex but it was a very small crack, this may be something to consider for a quick cheap fix just be careful the stuff is pretty toxic and can be hard to work with, good luck, got any pics to post?, stay in touch and let us know what you decide to do...Matt

I've worked with marine tex installing nose cones, etc and yes its a pain to wrok, but it does work well. I brought them to a GOOD welder today, and he's going to get them back into the game as well as new skegs...I'll most likely try to work out a deal with Sutphen 30 for his as his are all beefed up and nice. Just want to get the season out of mine. The other alternative is lower halves for both drives...with cones and big shafts. Next season. The upper gears are in decent shape, the cases can be made new again with a little elbow grease and alumalead filler. I'm just a normal member so I dont think I can post pix, but leave me an address in my e mail and I'll send you some copies, or better yet, in about a month or less I'll be in the water and then weather permitting...SPEED RUNS!!! I also was interested in those brochures you had for the 30' Oceanapacer. Any way, good to hear from you...I hope things are great for you and your "new" family.

Darkhorse468: things are well, hope also for you. The route you are taking seems to be the way to go, if you could eventually get Bill's drives that would be great, I'm sure his are done right. are you going to go down to the Fall River Run from the Regatta? I have a blurb about the Ocean Pacer from an old Motor Boating and Sailing, I also have tests on the 32' and 34' if you are interested. Everything I have read about Sutphens has been positive and very much so, in fact in one article it says that the Ocean Pacer outran a competitors cat with the same power! Stay in touch and let me know if you want copies of those articles and I will get them to you, have a good one...Matt

fobes,
A week ago I went by the marina that had the 1985 26 Sutphen at it that we had talked about a year ago. I asked and was told it had been traded by the owner on another boat and they didn't know where it had gone. If I see the old owner I will ask him for you.

I'm going to try to get Bills drives, even if I work out some kind of deal to "hold" them until next spring. All depends on what he needs to do. Anyway, I've been FLAT OUT the last two weeks with boat work...the holiday weekend and everyone wants it s done yersterday. Been squeezing in spare time on my baby and the devil is gonna be in the details. She's going to look custom NEW. Most of the cosmetics will be done later this season and during the offseason this winter. New bolsters, bench seat, cabin redone, gauges, zero effort controls, etc. etc. The most important part is the motors are done like I said, one was even spun up on a dyno and made almost 600hp. They didn't want to spin up too much, but it looks like I'll get around 550-575hp to each prop. Trannies are being done Huber style...BEEFY. The drives should be o.k for the season. I should be running by the middle of July(I know I'm repeating myself, but if I keep it up, it just might happen!!) The regatta for Fall River on the twelfth I'll be there in that 38'Scarab HEAT WAVE I was talking about. I finally got to play with her and her owner...what a freak show that boat is. At 5200rpm we're doing 78mph and then he cranks it up to 6000rpm and the FREAKISH noise of those blowers spooling up just drowns out everything. No lie it sounds like two turbine engines cranking up. At around 95mph you realize it just wants to GO! Hope to see you there, and yes I would love any info or stuff you can send me. My e mail is [email protected]. Drop a line and I'll get my address to you ASAP. Thanks
