Default stalls shifting to foward

When I shift from nutral to forward the engine stalls and I hear clicking sound I guess it is the drive engaging. Going into reverse it works fine. I have the drive off and the cable seem nice and smooth I don't get it. I just can get it adjusted right. It just stays killed. any ideas??????? maybe the drive???? What to check??????

oh yeah its an alpha 1 on a 350 merc. at 750rpm's

On an Alpha drive there is a switch that cuts the ignition off for a second when you shift into gear. Sounds like yours is malfunctioning and needs adjustment.

I HAVE SEEN CABLES THAT OPERATE EASY BUT ARE BAD. IF THE JACKET IS BUSTED THE CABLE WILL STILL OPERATE SMOOTH WITH THE OUTDRIVE OFF, BUT WITH THE DRIVE ON THE RESISTANCE WILL MAKE THE INNER CABLE PUSH OUT.
LOOK IN THE OUTDRIVE WHERE THE SLIDE GOES IN AND MAKE SURE IT IS CLEAN EXCEPT FOR LIGHT GREASE.
ON SOME MODELS WITH THE SPRING LOADED DEVICE MOUNTED ON THE SHIFT PLATE I HAVE SEEN THEM START TO STICK.

That switch, which mometarily shorts the ignition, only operates when going into nuetral from either forward or reverse. It does not activate when going from nuetral into gear. It is meant to drop the load in order to disengage the dog clutch. If it is activating when going into gear, check the linkage and cables to see why it is activating at the wrong time.

Most older model boats have this switch, alpha and bravo's. Agree it is the switch causing your issue, either bad, or needs position adjusted.

Yep the switch. Had it a couple of times on past boats. May just need to slightly bend it or adjust the cable....
