Renewal just came up for my 25-year-old 36 foot Cigarette. As I suspected would happen this year, the rate doubled to about $2600 annually plus a new survey. There are so many deductibles and limitations on the policy I doubt I would ever collect a dime unless the whole thing disappeared.
Has anyone successfully gotten liability-only insurance? Where might I find it for sale?

This will be a interesting one. I have tried to find this myself as I feel the same way about it as you do. There is no way we will collect what the boats are worth unless there is a total loss even then it will be less then the value more then likely.

there has to be a way to create a self insured group
where a large number of performance boaters
participate in, the money is invested to create a superfund and managed very carefully.
And with just enough overhead to keep a 2-3 person
team to handle the claims.

how about a liability only rider, not attached to a particular vehicle or property. I think they start at a million dollar coverage and are on top of your liability on your home owners. Any insurance agents here have any comments on this as an option?

Liability only: Good move if you can carry the risk. If you finance the boat, the lender probably wants comprehensive. I found Progressive to be the only one that offers liability only. As a matter of fact, they offer a a la cart system, where you can pick & choose. Overall, they are prettyy expensive, though.
