Talking Am I crazy?

Would like some opinions.....

I have a stock 97 carbed 330hp engine that I have performed the following mods on:

Later style vortec heads
Edelbrock performer rpm intake
Gil exhaust
454 HO crate motor cam
Holley 750 carb
Thunderbolt V magnum module (raised rev limiter to 5050)

Engine runs great, picked up some good mph, but i want more. I'm thinking about building a 502 not this winter but next winter. Meanwhile, I was thinking of getting the following things for the future motor, and maybe slappin them on this motor and see what happens.

Canfield 310cc rect port heads with 110cc chambers
502/502 cam
crane gold roller rockers
Hp500 single plane intake
Hp500 800cfm Holley

Does anybody think this stuff would genuinely make more power on my stock 454, or would I just be creating a mismatched combo.?

Dyno 2000 says i'll be making 150 more hp with over 500 ft/lbs of torque from 2000-5000rpm I think i know better than to believe that.

Tell me what ya'll think?

Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?

I agree, the compression will be down to about 8.45 from about 9.00. I'm not going to supercharge this due to the cast bottom end, remember, this is just a temporary until I get a 502 put together to slap these parts on. Do you think there will be a problem with running fairly large rect ports on a 330 lower end? I'm limited to 5000rpm in order to make the motor live for another year.

I just don't want a huge mismatch. I dunno if these heads and single plane intake are 2 big for the motor. The compression will be a lil low, but better than what the motor originally came with when it had the peanut ports on it (8.0:1)

maybe i'll hafta be the guinee pig and see what happens??? Anyone else run these heads on a 454 with a mild cam?

Go with the same heads that are used on the 502/502. They are the same as the Edelbrock heads (they are made by Edelbrock for GM). If you buy them from Edelbrock you can get the anodized heads with inconnel valves (marine heads). They have smaller chambers to retain compression on the 454.

Use the good dual plane Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold (same manifold used on the 502/502)and the 750 Edelbrock Squarebore marine carb.

I like the 502/502 camshaft.

You will have a solid 500 horsepower 502 engine when you are done (same as the 502/502) and a solid 450 horsepower 454 for now.
Sincerely

Madmax,

It sounds like you have done some nice mods on your 454. I don't think you would pick up much more power by bolting on the Canfield heads on your 454----especially with 310cc's of runner volume----that's a little too large in my opinion and could actually hurt performance. Heck, 310cc's is what I run on my naturally aspirated 540's. You'll need something around 265cc or so for a 454 for good runner velocity which makes good torque. The Merlin oval port head I think comes with about 269cc's (not sure) but they will work very well BOTH on a 454 and a 502! I don't really know enough about the Eldelbrock aluminum heads that Dennis Moore is speaking of, but Dennis is full of wisdom with this stuff. A 750 Holley is good enough on a 454 and an 800 Holley might be a touch better on the 502. You definately don't want to over carb the engine! Have fun!

Thanks for the replies guys........ !

Funny you should mention the Edelbrock heads, Dennis, cause that's the other one's I was considering. I've got the flow rates for the Edelbrock's, and the vortec's, and there isn't a huge difference between them, so I wasn't sure if they would pick up alot. The canfields, however, have a huge difference.??, but i realize flow rate doesn't mean everything.....

KAAMA, the merlin's would be perfect, cept the 119cc chambers. I really like them alot, just would have no compression in the interem with the 454. They would work perfect on the 502.....

Guess I've got lots to think about.

Thanks everyone..... back to the drawing board. I'll prob end up with the edelbrocks, they are nice and cheap.!
