Does anyone know what causes the high algae content that we have been seeing that last three weeks or so? It is algae right???????

That's what they said when lake Erie turned green a few weeks ago. I'm sure it's just a coincidence it started happening here a few days after the NE power outage when all the major cities along the lake dumped their raw sewage in because the treatment plants were shut down.

Shah,

The algea is finally blooming. Usually happens earlier in the year when the water get warm enough...late this year due to a cool spring.

Hey Shah Mat,

The water on the Potomac has been nasty. It is algae in the water. It is naturally occuring to a point. Run-off from farms and lawns aggrevate the situation. It seemed to be worse as you go north. The higher the fresh water content, the worse it gets. I'm glad my marina has a pool. I just go for a run and then go back and swim in the pool for a while. I heard of some people getting sick from the algae on the Sassafras river and upper bay.

I have never seen it this bad though. Yesterday I was watching the Tim's II water taxi plow through what looked like green paint.

Shah Mat, there is an article in the Mariner or the Nor'easter about this algae. We were at Sand Island yesterday and no algae. (end of the Susquehanna).

I was at Tim's yesterday and that stuff was nasty!!! Didn't stay long, there was no way I was getting in that stuff. Just cruised through and made it a boat soda/bathroom break and kept on going.

We were out for the National Capital Poker Run. Past the power lines heading towards Tims II it was so thick that it looked like we were running through pond slime. YUCK !!! It was even worse to watch other boats running through it spraying off the sides and the wake was even solid green.
Oh well we will be off to the Choptank River for another poker run this weekend.
