Default Scarab KV - need some help

Hi!

A original Miami Vice Scarab KV 38 is for sale in Norway for a reasonable price, and I would be pleased if you could help me out.

It is rerigged with new interior. Orginal colurs. Looks great.

I will check more about the engines. The seller tells me they are upgraded and pulls in excess of 500 hp each. We have an engine builder in town, and I will ask him about his opinion about the engines.

The boat has TRS drives. According to the seller, they are in good shape. How compares TRS drives to Bravo 1 / XR Drives? Any point to buy new drives and replace the TRS's?

The seller tells me the boat runs in excess of 70 mph. Is this the case if 500 HP on each side? Or are we more like 65 mph...?

Any special cautions to look for if buying this boat, except for the engines and drives (stringers, etc)?

Lastly, what kind of props are reccommended for this boat - 4 blade Bravo 1 or 5 blade Hydromotives?

Thanks!

Toffen,
You might want to post some of the questions about the boat over at the Scarab Owners Area. As far as the TRS drives go, Chris Martin at [email protected] can answer all your questions in regards to that topic. I am sure someone will chime in about the pros and cons of TRS versus Bravo. I do know that parts are slowly becoming less available for the TRS drive. Try a search on TRS outdrive.
A member of OSO did an outdrive retofit on a Cigarette using the Pulse drive that seemed to be quite successful. Do a member search for "Imongo". That is his username.
If I was going to do an outdrive upgrade to an older, heavier, twin engine offshore style boat, that is one of the drives I would consider. I know that Konrad makes a drive that is a direct replacement for the TRS called a Konrad 540. Many options to consider but I wouldn't just get rid of the TRS right away. They shift so smooth because they use a hydraulic tranny (Merc II or Borg Warner) unlike the Bravo which uses a cone clutch and shifts within the drive.
