Question 502 Oil System

I have a 95 502 MPI mag and would like to put the oil filter back on the block and use the 2 block taps for my oil cooler. Anybody running this type of system ? I do have oil temp problems when running wide open with the current factory system. Does anybody know what relief valves I should use or block off ? I would like to keep the oil going through the cooler and filter at all times.

The oil line plumbing in the block on the Gen V and Gen VI is not large enough to flow enough oil... If you are having oil temp problems.. again do a search on the subject.. There are some very good threads on this..
Answers to where to monitor your oil temp and oil coolers and all of that.. There is a wealth of knowledge in this board..
Good luck..

What type of oil—what viscosity—are you using? And, is it conventional, synthetic blend, fully synthetic, or “premium synthetic”?

Do not use the "cooler" ports on the block. They are too small (3/8"npt) for marine use. You need at least 1/2" lines and fittings for you oil system.

I agree with Mr Gadgets.....Do a search on this subject. Lots of info!!

The Merc block already has the 30psi bypasses installed. All you have to do is use a sandwich adapter between the filter and the block with 1/2 npt fittings and you'll be there.
