boat freaked me out today

I went out just tooling around and headed up the lake at about 3200 rpm, 44 mph. After say 1/2 hour I notice the temp was around 190 and YIKES the voltmeter said 16 volts! I came off throttle, and within 2 minutes the temp dropped back to norm(175-180) and the voltmeter went back to 12.5 volts. WTF? Was I trimmed wrong and not getting enough water for the temp to go up? Why the heck did the alternator start charging 16 freakin volts?

What kind of a motor do you have? I'm wondering if you have a liquid cooled regulator. Sometimes when the engine over heats the regulator goes wacky until the temps come back down. Usually the regulator is now fried, it's only a matter of time until it fails.

It may be that the voltage regulator went bad.
The voltage may have gone up to 16 volts and that would cause all of your guages to reed higher than normal.
