Is the flywheel used for the top mounted starter on TRS drives different than a standard GM automotive flywheel.

I internally balanced my new 540's so I bought new neutral balanced Hayes SFI approved flyweels. Will these work with the TRS top mounted, reverse rotation starters?

Nope, they have to be machined to accept the gear on the other side.

Do you know where I can get the correct flywheel? I'm sure they'll be for externally balanced engines andI'll have to have the counterwieght milled off and the flywheel rebalanced, but I need to get a pair ASAP.

Or, is it possible to remove the ring gear, flip it over and reweld it to the other side of the flywheel?

A machine shop should be able to change the gear over. I think they charged me $50 when I changed it to a top mounted.
Otherwise, I think Rex Marine or CP Performance (both online) can provide externally balanced flywheels for top mounted starters.

Thanks. I just called my machinist and he knew exactly what I was talking about and what I needed to do.

You should also be able to get it from any other marine motor with an externally balanced flywheel. I most cases I have had to knock the ring gear off, flip the fly wheel over, then heat the ring gear and knock it back onto the other side.

I usually heat the ring gear in 3 places and remove/install with 2 pairs of pliers. Works everytime.BBB

I used the oven, and told the wife I was cooking a suprise dinner. 450 degrees and the ring gear drops on, with the flywheel laying flat.

When I finished, we went to Outback for surf n' turf. Ended up costing about 20 bucks for the ring gear, 50 for dinner & tip.

It's amazing how we all do things to save money ourselves and work hard , only to go out and blow it away at restaurants, bars, etc. All the while, living less healthy than if we ate good home cooked meals! I do it too!!!
