just got a 1999 hp500 gen+ to stick in my scarab22. first of all whats the diff between a genVI and a gen+? it has 185 hours on it. i pulled the valve covers, and it looks to have triple valve springs with crane gold roller rockers. is this stock? would like to take care of any engine issues before it goes in the boat. anyone have any recomendations on exhaust? need to stay reasonable always on a weekend warrior budget. thanks.

Check the serial number with Merc. It will tell you if it has the old style springs etc or the new ones. I got lucky, mine are 8 or 9 motors into the new stuff.
I have two stock sets of exhaust from 1999 HP500s that came with my old boat when the previous owner installed stellings headers. I want a grand per set plus shipping and will include the tailpipes. They are off a Spectre 30. Let me know and good luck. I would replace the springs and do a leakdown and compression test before you put them in the boat.

hey shawn,thanks for the info. the sr# of mine is OL600036, seems to be the good stuff from what i can find out, but going to install some new isky springs. how about those crane gold roller rockers? are those stock? i've heard from some guys not to use alum rockers in these engines(breakage at the fulcrum area)??????? thanks again

The Crane gold rockers are stock on the 500's.
I've never heard of them breaking, not to say they don't, nor have I ever had a problem with mine.

Good idea to replace the springs at this point while the motor is out. CHEAP insurance, compared to the alternative......

Go with Isky springs,they are great.

I'm pretty sure Mercruiser use Crane gold as stock in the hp's

I have been using them for years with wild cams and hard springs,never failed.

Consider a change to ARP studs and adjusters,they are way better than stock.

Crane Golds are stock. They won't break at the pressures you are running, but the roller tips can flatspot and/or pit at 400 hrs or so - Crane will rebuild them cheaper than a new set.

Your springs are double springs with dampers.

Your motors have enough hours on them to replace the springs, and it will be a good tim to check the wear on the tie bar on your lifters, too. Look for one or two pair having more slop than the rest (this would indicate your lifter bores being slightly out of square). Those lifters aren't known to last forever.

I wasn't happy with a 25" mirage+ so I tried a 22" Bravo. Rocket out of the hole but 4900@60mph Should have went with a 24". But I will say it turned it into a different boat, for the good.
