Remote oil filter not a good idea?

Remote oil filter not a good idea?
I went to napa to get a remote oil setup , and the guy told me it wasnt a good idea and that the motors didnt last as long because of it. Didn't seem right to me. I wanted the remote oil setup in order to put a oil temp sender since i have a gauge but not hooked up. Where else can i put the sender?

The best place to put the sensor is in the pan. As to what the Napa guy was talking about...who knows. Merc has a remote filter on ALL of their stern drive engines.

That NAPA guy is full of chit. I've gotten some REALLY bad info from NAPA in the past. I NEVER ask a question if I go there for a part. I go armed with the part number and just buy it.

i figured he was full of it, in my case i cant put the oil temp sender in my pan, where else can i put it?above the oil filter i have a plug where i have the oil pressure gauge, wouldn't work there would it?

Depends, do you have an oil cooler? If so, depending on the plumbing you will measure temp either before or after the oil has passed thru the cooler.

The guy might be correct in the respect that some of the really el-cheapo remote filter conversions will actually bypass the oil instead of running it through the filter. Buy the Merc stuff and be happy.

Some filter blocks have a pressure bypass which will bypass the filter at a certain pressure differential - this is a safety feature to keep from drystarving the motor.
If you put on a remote kit, you need to verify if you have a spring bypass AND what pressure it is set to bypass. I believe 15psi is the lowest you should have on the block for a remote filter setup.
Somebody knows the correct number, I'm sure.

You need the 30 psi bypass or it will bypass due to backpressure.The OEM merc bypass is the 30 psi unit but you can get it at any GM parts depot.The problem is instaling it with the engine in the boat.The ports on most aftermarket automotive remote filter adapters are only 3/8 NPT wich meens they wil bypass more than the stock merc unit.
