Default IMCO SC upper vs. XR upper

Need some feedback.
Is the IMCO SC upper that much better than an XR upper?
It is going behind a 540 motor. I will be using a 2" shortie. My "X" is presently at 15.25 inches.
Thanks for any replies.

With Imco's you don't have to change the gimbal bearing, sleeve or put trim limit spacers in the trim cylinders. They also use a steel spanner nut and rigid seal carrier. Imco will put 7/16 ARP studs in for the top cap.Why the way, Merc large u-joint assm. has no advantage over the standard one because they break the same. Imco now has a middlle yoke that is stronger than Merc's larger yoke. Imco has a nice tower they install. Try Max Machine too. They also make a great SC upper and they have a full length tower and awesome non-full compliment needle bearings.I use Imco upgrades and Max Machine bearings.

I've had new Merc XR drives that Merc didn't warranty because of the type of failures.Merc lately has been cracking down on this, especially if they are on high hp motors. New tech reps are looking at everything now and are not forgiving.

What kind of failure?

How much power were you running?

Broken u-joints, broken towers, blowing top caps off, and broken housings were the spanner nut is. Some stuff was on blower motors and some was on HP500efis. I think Merc is getting tired of eating drives. Imco has no warranty on their stuff but its been good so far.

I have been running a whippled hp500efi with the IMCO without a problem for the last year. You can also go with a -3 shory with the IMCO. If your drive is real high, you will have to open the water intake by grinding the pickup towards the skag. The speedmaster lower has the pickups lower from the start. - overall I have been very satisfied with the IMCO and would recommend them.

Russ,

I would highly recommend the IMCO SC. I tried everything on my former single 540 (went through 4 different modified drives), and nothing worked long-term until the IMCO SC. I wish that it would have been available sooner.

And the IMCO SC has an integrated shower cap in its top cap.
