Does this car require premuim gas since it is supercharged? I have heard both. Anyone have any experiances with these or a regular Grand Prix GT?

If you do not get a good answer here, I will call my Mom's mechanic, Keith Brommelkamp of Water 'n' Wheels oustide of Chicago. He is an EXCELLENT mechanic, and drives a GTP for his personal car. Knows it inside and out.

Friend has one. Premium only on the supercharged motor. Troutly nailed, it is a POS. Damn near every part including the supercharger has been replaced. Pontiac built that car twice, bet the warranty costs eat into the bottom line just a bit...

We had the GTP's for company cars.
We ran them on Pacific Pride regular.
We got 100k but they loved to go through CV joints, brakes, timing belts, & indeed were full of rattles due to the stiff suspension.

But we drove them like we stole 'em.

mpally, I just bought a 98 GTP a month ago. The manual states that you can use 89 octane or above. The prevous owner (my B-I-L) used 89 octane and so far, I haven't heard any valve noise or spark knock. My car has over 221,000 miles on it and I have been averaging over 23 mpg. I would say that the ride is about the same as a Camaro or Firebird. Not many bumps in the road get past it. The car is plenty quick, for a v-6, 240hp.

I would avoid them, RUN RUN RUN

We have over 130k on Monica's and we drive it hard
so far new lower left ball joint and front rotors.

the GTP supercharged are just too much for the engine


the 94's Troutly was talking about did suck.
plus they were ulgy
they were much improved with the wide body style
the 99 GT we have with good tires handles very well
better then my 82 corvette

I have had a 98 GTP for 4 years and love it. 108k and it runs great. I'm tall (6-1) and the front seats go waaay back for a comfortable seating position. I have been using 89 octane for the last year and a half with no problems. Valve cover and oil pan gaskets, brakes, tires, a wheel bearing (ABS speed sensor is inside), and a tune up is all I have had to do. 23-25 mpg on the highway. I took it to Maryland International Raceway last year and it went 15.02 on the first pass leaving at idle. Not bad for a V6. The races rained out after that pass so I never got a second one. I'm sure it would have dipped into the 14's by bringing the rpm's up against the converter.

I had a GT and liked it. I would stay away from the GTP as well

I had a 98 GTP for about 4 years and overall it was a nice car. I used premium fuel for the most part.
