Post Alternative to Merc water temp switch?

The water temp switch that triggers the alarm is $55, the crooks. Anybody have any idea of a less expensive alternative. I do like the alarm system, has saved my butt a few times. These things break if you look at them wrong.

This is just a shot in the dark, but have your local auto parts guy look up a temp switch for a Ford small-block, mid 60's or early 70's vintage, idiot light instead of a guage. Seems to me they are the same thread. Like I said, it's a long shot but you never know.

Cool

The only problem in that thought is at what temperature does the automotive switch close. Cars use presurized water systems the trip point may be above the boiling point. Is your engine worth the chance.

How did you know I was having to replace mine due to a small oil leak in it !?
I am also interested in a "substitute". $55.00 is outrageous! I would bet there is a stock Chevy part to replace this, but how to find it???????

Cool, never thought to look there. I wonder if they sell the temp switch seperately?

I have one from my old engine. The problem is that I can't tell which one is the switch, and which one is the sender. If you cover shipping, I'll give it to you. Take that Merc!

Cord, If it has a red cylindical body and a 11/16 wrench fits, then it is the switch. And I would gladly pay the freight.

Birdog, Do you remember the part number or how you found it?

This is great especially considering I just had to pay a lousy $80 for a tinted window ticket.
