I just picked up an 86 Scarab III (project) with tranny problems.

The owner put in BW's 1.0:1 (1018-0014), and says they wont turn the props... both of them!!? sounds like something wasn't put back together properly? He said the first time he tried to put it in gear the prop spun 4 times and stopped. He tried adding fluid and then the prop spun 8 times and stopped. Any thoughts on what I should try before pulling them out? I think I've ready everything I can out here concerning this, and it looks like it's possible that getting the pump in backwards would cause this type of problem(?).

Also, he threw in a set of BW's 1.52:1 (1018-004). I've been thinking of having them looked at and then using them if they're good. I don't believe he ever needed 1:1 transmissions with only slightly modified engines(no blower). So I'm thinking, after studying these boards for a couple months, that using 1:1 trannies on this boat is a big mistake (true/false?). If the 1:1's did work wouldn't it be okay if I just picked up lower pitch props?

They were all one to one transmissions in outdrive applications. The 1.52 and 1.9:1 transmissions are used in inboard applications.
