AN EVENT SURE TO ROCK THE OHIO RIVER

The Ohio River has been host to a number of spectacular events over the years, such as the annual WEBN fireworks which fill the river and its banks with hundreds of thousands of spectators and who can forget about Tall Stacks’ music, arts and heritage festival. Each of these events have played a major role in our city’s heritage but none of these events can prepare you for the excitement that will hit the river this Father’s Day Weekend at the 2004 Cincinnati Offshore Grand Prix.

The second annual Cincinnati Offshore Grand Prix is dropping anchor in the tri-state on June 18-20, 2004. Last year’s event was held in the charming Village of New Richmond where more than 10,000 spectators gathered to watch 40 of most magnificent powerboats in the country compete.

“We planned on hosting the race downtown last year, but the coast guard wanted to see how the event was run before we could bring it under the bridges. Needless to say, they were very pleased and this year we are bringing all the excitement of powerboat racing to the downtown area on a four mile oval race course for everyone to see,” said Chris Reindl, president of Reindl Powerboats.

Many of the boats competing in the event, average speeds ranging anywhere from 70-140 mph and will arrive from areas such as Florida, California, New Jersey, Michigan and even our very own tri-state. The best viewing for the race will likely be along Serpentine Wall at Sawyer Point, the Purple Walking Bridge, Newport on the Levee, or at one of the many river side restaurants.

In addition to the offshore boats, the Cincinnati Offshore Racing Association has invited the APBA Inboard Hydroplanes. This means the weekend will be packed with a total of 18 races, all with a front row seat at Sawyer Point.

Reindl Powerboats has also announced the addition of a $30,000 "Tri State Cup" prize purse and trophy to the Central Division Champions of each class.

Local boat, automobile, and RV dealers will have their displays in Sawyer Point along with a number of vendor booths and live music. Hang out with the race teams, sign up for an offshore racing school and visit the Hot Pits, where the race boats will be on display. It’s a fun filled weekend for everyone and admission is free.

Cincinnati Offhshore Grand Prix is ready to Rock and Roll!

The race certainly is on and many of the Silver Cup teams are already pre-registered. We will honor all Great Lakes Silver Cup Memberships at our events and have sent off a letter to the series. We actually NEVER even received the letter from them at all.

We have over 20 Offshore teams and over 25 APBA Hydroplane race teams already committed to attending the event - and everything is set to run right through downtown. The cat race (P-X, SC and SCL) will be an event fans do not want to miss at Sawyer Point.

The Park hosted the Mobile Skate Park Series this past weekend with an attendance of over 72,000 people. Tear down for that event is almost over and we have already began getting things in place for the Cincinnati Offshore Grand Prix.

We will have a total of 18 races on Saturday and Sunday, as well as a full festival with games, rides, a rock climbing wall, food, drinks and beer for the fans.

We will be providing the first 30 teams registered with free hotel rooms and have added an additional $30,000 cash prize purse to the Central Division Series Champions in each class. The Central Division races are as follows:

Port Huron, MI June 11, 12, 13, 2004
Cincinnati, OH June 18, 19, 20, 2004
Milwaukee, WI July 30, 31, Aug 1, 2004
New Richmond, OH August 6, 7, 8, 2004

Reindl Powerboats will also offer boat storage after the Port Huron and Milwaukee events as well as transportation to and from the airport. We will also be offering the race teams free hotel rooms for the New Richmond event.

Boarding Begins at 11:30 AM from the Cincinnati Serpentine Wall. The yacht will be anchored in the center of the race course as the official turn boat until the end of the race day
(around 6:00 PM).

Special Appearance: A very rare Russian Hydrofoil boat will also be on display at Sawyer Point during this event. The C003 is one of three hydrofoils produced, and the only one still in existence! This vessel was constructed in the early 70's as a patrol/rescue craft designed to rescue downed pilots in the Artic circle. The Russian Hydrofoil is capable of speeds over 150 mph some called her the “flying boat.” See it for yourself at the Cincinnati Offshore Grand Prix.
