I have a standard type merc power steering system. It steered without any problem last year this year when I took it out the steering is very stiff and not smooth. I am not sure if it is the pump or the cable anyone have an idea.

Could very well be the cable, just did one in an old Baja, and couldnt believe how stiff it was.

I just went thru my whole steering system. Its a 1989 and had many problems.

As rchevelle71 said, its probably the cable - for your bank account I hope so.

You can isolate the cable by disconnecting it from the transom power assist unit - pull the clevis pin - if its still stiff, its binding in the power assist unit tube, or its the cable, helm unit, or steering wheel. Mine was binding in the power assist tube back at the transom due to corrosion and the cable was bent (maybe due to the corrosion).

I replaced the assist unit as it was leaking. I tried to use the old cable with no luck as it was bent too much. Had to replace it.

With the cable disconnected, the helm was still hard to turn.
I used WD40 on the steering wheel shaft and that freed it up.

If that doesn't help, its probably the helm control unit - only option is to replace it.

The last place to check is the outdrive. With the steering system disconnected, try to move the steering arm at the transom. It should move easily. If not, open a case of beer and start drinking, it gets really worse after this! I used to drink cabernet, now all I can afford is rot gut!!!
